Check what happens after the train
A rail journey can be only part of the trip to either airport. Identify the connection that gets you from the station to your terminal, including any walking, waiting and luggage handling.
Los Angeles International Airport — LAX
LAX lists a Metro Connector Shuttle between its terminals and the LAX/Metro Transit Center, where passengers connect with Metro rail and bus services. Include that airport connection when comparing a transit journey.
LAX official ground-transport informationJohn Wayne Airport, Orange County — SNA
John Wayne lists local bus access at the airport, while its nearby train stations are in Irvine, Santa Ana and Tustin. A regional train itinerary therefore needs a separately planned station-to-airport connection.

Plan collection separately from drop-off
If someone is driving you, or you intend to use an app-based ride, write down the outbound drop-off and return collection arrangements separately. Include the movement between baggage claim and the meeting point.
At John Wayne, app-based rides can drop passengers at the upper-level terminal curb, but collection uses designated parking-structure areas. Do not assume that your return pickup will be where you were dropped off. For LAX, consult its current terminal and ground-transport instructions before agreeing on a meeting point.
Understand the 36-mile airport separation
LAX and SNA are approximately 36.0 straight-line miles apart in FliteMaster’s catalog. This measures the separation of two airport coordinates; it is not road mileage or a travel-time estimate.
When using a selected home airport as your map reference, keep that reference separate from your actual starting point. Compare directions from your address to each airport rather than treating the airport-to-airport distance as your own journey.

Budget for the whole party in both directions
For driving, record actual road mileage, tolls and the parking arrangement you would use. For transit or a booked ride, record the complete journey rather than just its first leg. Keep unknown amounts visible.
Shared vehicle costs belong once in the party total; per-person tickets belong against each traveler who pays them. Include both ground journeys and any different return arrangements. Consider transfers, accessibility and luggage alongside the amount you expect to spend.
Keep only workable departure options
LAX and SNA are eligible in FliteMaster’s airport catalog. That does not confirm provider coverage, a flight to your destination or an available fare.
If you later obtain flight quotes, hold the destination, dates, cabin and traveler count constant. Review the schedule and included extras before deciding whether either airport improves the whole trip. Neither airport is a universal winner.
