FREE TRAVEL PLANNING

Is another airport worth the drive?

Work out the airfare difference needed to cover extra airport-reference ground costs. Use your own planning inputs without a live flight search.

No account or Search Credits needed. These tools use your planning inputs and, where relevant, local airport information—not live flight prices. They do not start a fare search.

What would the extra drive need to save?

Compare ground budgets first. Then see the airfare difference needed to break even—without an account, travel dates or a live fare search.

Your baseline is an airport, not your house.

The baseline has zero airport-to-airport driving. The alternative adds travel from that airport. House-to-airport access, destination transport and other trip costs are outside this model; they may change the decision.

1. Choose the airports and trip scope
Outbound and return driving; enter billed parking days below.
1–9, whole numbers only. Vehicle costs are counted once, not once per traveler.
2. Set your driving assumptions

The budget estimate is 1.25 × straight-line distance, not a verified road route. It is unavailable for certain islands, Alaska, Hawaii and long journeys. Confirm that the route is drivable before relying on it.

0–30; up to 3 decimal places. This model budgets gasoline fuel, not electricity.
1–200 mpg. Use the same vehicle for both options.
0–1,000 each way. The same amount is counted twice; enter 0 only if toll-free.
3. Compare parking

Use the same billed parking duration at both airports. Enter 0 days if you will not park. Parking days are not inferred from travel dates.

0–365, whole numbers only. Include any partial-day charges in the billed count.
0–500 per day at the baseline airport. Enter 0 only for free parking.
0–500 per day at the alternative airport. Enter 0 only for free parking.
4. Optionally add a fare difference
Baseline fare minus alternative fare, for all 1 travelers and the same round-trip itinerary. Positive = cheaper alternative; negative = dearer alternative. Up to ±$100,000.

Enter a difference you already know, including comparable airline fees. Do not multiply it by travelers again. Leaving this blank gives a ground-cost break-even only, not an estimate of trip savings.

Calculated on this page. No sign-in, Search Credits or flight search. Your entries stay in page memory and are not saved. Use Clear all inputs to reset.

Your break-even will appear here.

Choose both airports, enter the costs you know, and calculate. Changing an input clears an old result until you calculate again.

How this budget works—and what it leaves out
  • One shared gasoline vehicle. Fuel = airport-to-airport miles ÷ mpg × fuel price. The baseline airport has zero reference miles and tolls; this does not mean getting there from your house is free.
  • Round-trip mode includes both drive legs, twice the entered one-way tolls, and billed days × each airport’s parking rate. A blank return distance repeats outbound miles. One-way mode excludes parking, return driving and later vehicle recovery.
  • We reuse the planner’s existing ground-cost math. Internal fixed reference dates encode only the entered parking duration, not actual travel dates; nothing is sent or saved. Each fuel, parking and toll line is rounded to cents before totals are compared.
  • Airfare advantage is baseline airfare minus alternative airfare for the entire party and itinerary. Break-even is alternative ground total minus baseline ground total, divided by travelers. Negative thresholds mean lower ground costs, not a promise of a cheaper trip.
  • No time value, wear and tear, rental car, extra vehicles, hotel, destination transfers or unentered airline fees are included. Verify routes and all applicable costs separately. Unknown airfare is never treated as zero.

Keep the whole ground journey in view

Read the airport ground-cost guide for costs outside this comparison. To explore other eligible airports, use the nearby airport finder; a map radius is not a verified driving route.
