AIRPORT COMPARISONS

JFK, LaGuardia or Newark: compare your departure options

Choosing between JFK, LaGuardia and Newark starts with your whole journey: how you will reach the airport, the trip you need, and how you will get home afterward. This guide helps you build a shortlist. It does not rank today’s fares or promise that changing airports will save money.

These guides provide planning information, not live flight prices. Check search availability in the planner. Opening the planner does not start a fare search or use Search Credits.

JFK / LGA / EWRAirport comparisons

Compare the ground journey first

The three airports connect to different transport networks. Start with the place you will actually leave from, then check the complete journey to the correct terminal.

John F. Kennedy — JFK

AirTrain connects the airport with subway and Long Island Rail Road services. Check which interchange works for your starting point.

JFK official public-transport information

LaGuardia — LGA

Bus connections link the airport with the wider transit network. Check the bus and any onward transfer, rather than assuming a direct rail journey.

LaGuardia official public-transport information

Newark Liberty — EWR

AirTrain connects the terminals with Newark Airport’s rail station, served by NJ Transit and Amtrak. Check the airport-station connection as part of the full journey.

Newark official public-transport information

Use the airport operators’ current information for your travel date. Check operating hours, service notices, transfers, walking and accessibility. Repeat the check for your return journey, especially if you arrive at a different time of day.

What the airport distances mean

FliteMaster’s catalog coordinates put JFK and LaGuardia approximately 10.7 miles apart, JFK and Newark 20.8 miles apart, and LaGuardia and Newark 16.7 miles apart.

These are straight-line distances between airports. They are not road mileage, train journeys or travel-time estimates. The figures help explain the airport map; they cannot tell you which airport is quickest from your home.

Calculated from the OurAirports coordinate snapshot used by FliteMaster, retrieved October 18, 2026. Distances are rounded to one decimal place; the snapshot date is not a transport-service update.

Make comparable budgets

For each airport on your shortlist, write down the details below. Keep unknown amounts marked as unknown. A missing fee is not a zero-dollar fee.

If you later compare flight quotes, use the same destination, dates, traveler count and cabin. Then check schedules, connections and included extras. A lower ticket price alone does not establish a lower whole-trip cost.

  • The ground journey you would actually take, in both directions where relevant.
  • Fuel, parking and tolls if driving, or the full transit/rideshare cost if not.
  • Transfers and walking you are comfortable with while carrying your luggage.
  • Time for check-in, security and terminal access, separate from travel time.
  • Any flight-specific baggage or seat costs that would change the comparison.

Use FliteMaster as a starting point

Choose JFK, LGA or EWR as your home-airport reference and explore the airport map. The radius is measured from that selected airport, not your house.

Airport eligibility in the planner does not guarantee a particular airline, route or available fare. Even when price searching is paused, you can use this guide to prepare your shortlist and confirm ground-transport details directly with the operators.

Build your airport shortlist

Use the map to explore eligible departure airports. Your selected home airport is the reference point, not your house. Confirm ground journeys separately and check availability before requesting any flight prices. Start without a fare search using the free nearby airport finder, then compare your assumptions in the airport driving-cost calculator.
