Two different rail connections
Look beyond the train journey itself. Each airport has a different connection between rail service and its terminal.
BWI — Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport
The airport provides a shuttle connection between its terminal and the MARC/Amtrak station. Treat the train journey and the terminal connection as separate parts of your plan.

The airport’s Metrorail station serves the Silver Line and connects with the main terminal through a pedestrian tunnel. Include the station-to-terminal movement in your plan rather than stopping the comparison at the train arrival.

Follow the airport’s links to the relevant operator and check your actual travel date, operating hours, service notices, ticket requirements and accessibility needs. Do the same for your return journey.
Airport separation is not your driving distance
BWI and IAD are approximately 45.2 straight-line miles apart, calculated from the coordinates in FliteMaster’s catalog. That number is useful for geographic comparison; it is not a road route or a journey-time estimate.
A radius centered on BWI and one centered on IAD answer different map questions. Neither begins at your house. Check real directions from your own starting point before choosing an airport based on ground travel.
Calculated from the OurAirports coordinate snapshot used by FliteMaster, retrieved October 18, 2026. The distance is rounded to one decimal place; the snapshot date is not a transport-service update.
Compare complete access plans
Use a row for each airport and fill in the four details below. If you drive, compare actual road mileage, tolls and the parking option you would use. If you use transit, compare the entire chain of connections.
The most convenient ground option can change with your starting point, luggage and travel times; this guide does not assign a universal winner.
- The complete outbound journey, including any station connection, walking or parking transfer.
- The complete return journey at the time you expect to arrive.
- The whole-party transport cost, with per-person and shared-vehicle amounts kept separate.
- Any unresolved detail, such as an operating-hour question or an accessibility requirement.
Keep airport access separate from the flight decision
Once you have comparable flight quotes, review the same destination, dates, cabin and traveler count. Include bags or seats that change the amount you would pay, and consider schedules and connections alongside price.
A lower ticket quote can be offset by a more expensive or less practical ground journey. Equally, a longer ground journey may be acceptable for your plans. Record the trade-off rather than assuming one airport always saves money.
Explore the two airports
BWI and IAD are selectable in FliteMaster’s current airport planner. That confirms catalog eligibility only; it does not confirm a route, airline or available fare. Check search availability in the planner before expecting live flight prices.
